Blogging has become hugely popular in the last few years and it’s not difficult to see why, thanks to a wealth of devices that allow you to produce content, both at home and on the go. Add to that the increasing use of mobile broadband and mobile gadgets, plus software that’s really user-friendly and you’ve got a sure- fire recipe for blogging success.

And, since the launch of tablet computers with Apple leading the way with its iPad, there’s now an even better option for blogging on the go. However, is a tablet as well suited for blogging purposes as other devices that allow you to make posts whenever you want? Actually yes, because the tablet is altogether a more convenient proposition than many smartphones on the market.

The reason for this is pretty simple – with a tablet you get much more screen real estate that’ll allow you to make blog posts without having to deal with fiddly keyboards and the small screens found on many handsets. Of course, the smartphone is perfect for something like Twitter because that only needs you to type one line of text.

But with blogging there is often a need to produce lengthier posts, as well as adding more extensive image and video content too. While this is still possible on a variety of mobile handsets, the tablet computer gives you that much more freedom to get the job done correctly and efficiently.

Why not a laptop?

Some people are still of the persuasion that a laptop, or its smaller counterpart the netbook, can get a blogging job done best of all and in many cases that might well be the case. After all, a laptop usually has a collection of software that gives you that much more flexibility when it comes to getting work done.

But let’s not forget that tablets now come with many options on the app front, and all that means you’ll still be able to find slimmed down software tools to get the job done too. What’s more, there’s no doubt that kitting yourself out with a tablet, as opposed to the generally bulkier laptop and netbooks out there on the market, will present you with a much more portable proposition.

Wordpress App for iPad

Adding to the appeal of a tablet for blogging is the fact that they can all connect to the internet with ease, either by wireless or 3G mobile broadband. Some models allow you to do both, which of course means that you’ll be able to make posts pretty much everywhere you go, just as long as you can get a connection that is.

Then there’s the issue of battery life, which on something like an Apple iPad is really impressive. If you need to make posts when you’re out in the field and don’t have sufficient battery power then you’re going to be scuppered, which can often be the case with less better performing laptops. So, in that and many other respects, you’re onto a winner with a tablet when it comes to staying online and keeping your blogging activities alive.

Cross-promotion of your blog and its individual posts is essential to helping drive traffic to your site and attracting more readers and subscribers. Sharing your latest posts on Facebook, Twitter and your other social-networking profiles is one way to accomplish this. However, making it easy for your readers to also share your blog and its content will help to increase awareness.

There are several handy WordPress plugins that offer sharing buttons both within your posts and on your blog for a lot of social-networking sites. Here are our top 5:

Bookmarkify

(http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/bookmarkify/)
This popular plugin includes sharing buttons for over 50 popular social-networking sites and allows you to add a button for readers to share information by e-mail. You can choose buttons for all the sites available or customize it to share with only those sites you like. Buttons can be included within individual blog posts or on the sidebar. You can use the plugin with WordPress or use the html code for any other site.

Add This

(http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/addthis/)
Add This provides sharing access to 330 of the “most popular” social-networking sites through a small sidebar widget with one master button. You can also sign up for a free account to get feedback on how your visitors are sharing your content and find what social-networking sites are getting the most activity. You can then tailor your marketing efforts.

Dandy ID Services

(http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/dandyid-services/)
Share your presence on 300+ social-networking sites (you have profiles on all of them, right?) with your blog so that readers can connect with you. This plugin allows readers to connect with your social profiles, rather than sharing through those sites. It also allows you to quickly share your content through those profiles. You choose simple text links or icons, and choose the sites you want to display, in a sidebar widget.

Sociable

(http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/sociable/)
Get a line of cool icons with links for readers to share your blog posts on their social-networking sites. You can also set up the buttons to share pages on your blog or your RSS feed.

Bookmark Me

(http://www.satollo.net/plugins/bookmark-me)
This handy plugin allows your readers to share content through social-networking sites that are not in English. It currently includes Russian, Arabic, Italian, French, German, Spanish, Slavic, Dutch and Swedish sites.

There are dozens more plugins that allow you and your readers to share your content through social-networking sites. What are some of your favorites? Tell us about them in the comments!

Here’s another tutorial series. As the name suggests its going to be focused on increasing traffic to your WordPress blog. There are various ways using which you can increase the pageviews your blog gets. However one particular easy and quick way that I found out was pinging. Read on to know more.

So what exactly do you mean by pinging? Well Wikipedia explains it as:

In blogging, ping is an XML-RPC-based push mechanism by which a weblog notifies a server that its content has been updated. An XML-RPC signal is sent to one or more "ping servers," which can then generate a list of blogs that have new material.

In simple words, when you publish a post, your server will notify other servers (like Google) that you have served up new content, so that they may come and index you quickly.

Although sites like Google, Bing, Yahoo do it automatically, yet if you were to notify more sites manually, things do look more cheerful! So how do you do it? Just follow these simple steps:

Log in to your WordPress

Go to Settings => Writing

Now scroll down to Update Services

In the text box that you see, just enter the following ping services:

http://1470.net/api/ping
http://ipings.com
http://www.pingmyblog.com
http://a2b.cc
http://a2b.cc/setloc/bp.a2b       <br

Well its official – WordPress 3.0, codenamed “Thelonious”, has just been released. Time to upgrade now. So how do you do it, without breaking up your site? Its quite easy in fact. There are mainly two ways to get about it, just read on.

Well the first way is to download the files and upload it via a FTP software and the other one is the automatic, easier and recommended method.

So first of all, before doing either of the methods, back-up (by downloading) your database(s) and your .htaccess file. Now select either one (ONLY one) method from below. I do recommend the second method.

Upgrading Via FTP

After performing the back-up mentioned in the previous paragraph, go and download the latest version of WordPress. You can do so from here.

Login to your wordpress dashboard and deactivate all your plugins. IMPORTANT.

Delete all files except the ones mentioned below:

wp-config.php
file;

wp-content
folder;  Special Exception:  the
wp-content/cache
and the
wp-content/plugins/widgets
folders should be deleted.

wp-images
folder;

wp-includes/languages/
folder–if you are using a language file do not delete that folder;

.htaccess
file–if you have added custom rules to your
.htaccess
, do  not delete it;

robots.txt
file–if your blog lives in the root of your site (ie. the blog is the site) and you have created such a file, do not delete it.

Now upload the previously downloaded wordpress package to the directory (or root, wherever) you had your wordpress blog.

Now go to the upgrade page of your blog. You can access it by pointing it to wp-admin/upgrade.php page of your blog, and follow the on-screen guide. Eg.: http://example.com/blog/wp-admin/upgrade.php

Now install any plugins or reactivate the older ones you want.

Thats it your done!

Also Read: WordPress 3.0, Beta 1 Released + Screenshots

Upgrading Automatically

This is way easier than the previous method and also recommended one.

Login to your WordPress dasboard.

In the Tools menu, select Upgrade option.
Alternatively, you can just click on the ‘WordPress x.x is available! Please Update Now‘ link in the yellow shade above on the dashboard to access the upgrade page.

In the new page that opened, click on the Upgrade Automatically button.

After you click on the button, some messages will follow,with the last one being WordPress upgraded successfully.

Thats it, enjoy the new edition of WordPress!

Now that wordpress has been released you might also want to read on how to enable the Multi-User capability or Network mode, as it is called now. You can do so by viewing this article : How to Enable Network Mode in WordPress 3.0 beta 1

Tried it out yet?

Its no secret that WordPress is one of the, if not THE best, blogging platforms around. And one of the best things about it is the large number of plugins that it provides from the large community which supports it. So how do you install a wordpress plugin? Well there are 3 ways of which I know. As always, read on.

Well you must be knowing 2 if not 3 of the below methods already. The third option is a method commonly used by many bloggers, however there are still seasoned bloggers who don’t know about it.

Here are the three methods we will be taking a look at:

Upload Via FTP

Search and install via your blog’s plugins page

Install using One Click Plugin Updater plugin

Upload Via FTP

The most common and recommended method is to download your plugin and then upload it to your server via a FTP client like FileZilla.

In this process you find the plugin you want to install to your blog, download it to your computer and then upload it via the FTP software to your plugins directory/folder of your web-host (which is situated in the wp-content folder). Alternatively you could use an online File Manager provided from your web-hosting provider.

Plugins folder (as seen in FileZilla)

Search and install via your blog’s plugins page

This method works only for installation of plugins that are hosted on WordPress’s Plugin Directory. There are thousands of plugins hosted here so there may not be a need for you to go searching elsewhere.

So the first step here is to search for a suitable plugin in the directory. Alternatively you can search for the plugin via the Add New page in the Plugins section of your WordPress dashboard (yourdomain.com/wp-admin/plugin-install.php).

Search for the plugin

Once you press the Search Plugin button, the WordPress software searches for matches and presents a list to you.

Search results for the plugin

In this case the first result is the one we were targeting. So just click Install to the right of the result. Now a lightbox-type pop-up should open up. Click on install once again.

Now the plugin will be automatically downloaded and installed for you. When the page refreshes just search for the Activate Plugin link and click on it. Now your plugin is activated and you are ready to go!

Install using One Click Plugin Updater plugin

Well using the previous method, you could install plugins without using a FTP client. But the one condition was that you could only install plugins that were hosted on WordPress’s Plugin Directory.

To overcome this drawback, here is a plugin called One Click Plugin Updater. Firstly, use any of the above two methods to install this plugin. Now when you activate it you’ll get an option called Install a Plugin in your Plugins menu.

Search for the plugin you want to install. Now get the download link (by right-clicking and selecting ‘Copy Link Location’ or something similar), go to the Install a Plugin page and insert it into the top-most text-box, titled URL. Select the type as Plugin and click on Install.

Installing the plugin using One Click Plugin Updater

Thats it now, when the page refreshes just click on the Activate Plugin and I guess you can take over from there. You can also upload a plugin, which you might have earlier downloaded and stored away on your PC.

Interestingly the One Click Plugin Updater also allows you to install themes, without using a FTP software. Its similar to installing a Plugin, only change the type option to Theme.

So how did you find this article. Know about more ways to install a plugin? Please do share it with us.

WordPress by default comes bundled with the jQuery framework. You can find it in the wp-includes\js\jquery directory. Many themes use this framework extensively for various effects and widgets alike. Unless you are on a dedicated server or are using a CDN, chances are that jQuery takes a whole lot of time to load. The best way is to speed up this process is to include the jQuery library fomr the Google’s Ajax Libraries API. Read on to learn how to include it in your theme.

Actually the method is quite simple. If your theme includes a direct jQuery call from the header.php (usually will be written like

<script type=’text/javascript’ src=’http://domain-name.tld/wp-includes/js/jqueryjquery.min.js?ver=2.9.2′></script>

or something similar) just delete the line.

If your theme designer had adopted efficient programming practices, he would have used the wp_enqueue_script() function. It can be identified by going to your Theme Functions (functions.php) file of your theme.

Now to include the script from Google`s Ajax Libraries API servers, just insert the following code into the Theme Functions (functions.php) file of your theme:

// smart jquery inclusion
if (!is_admin()) {
wp_deregister_script(‘jquery’);
wp_register_script(‘jquery’, (“http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1/jquery.min.js”), false);
wp_enqueue_script(‘jquery’);
}

Once done, save the file and your done. To check if the change has occurred, load your blog’s home page (or any other page for that matter). Now press Ctrl+Shift+R to force refresh the page.

Now take a look at the page source (Ctrl+U or View => Source). If the following line appears, you have successfully included this hack into your wordpress blog:

<script type=’text/javascript’ src=’http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1/jquery.min.js?ver=2.9.2′></script>

The advantage of this hack is that your page loading times will get faster and in lieu better!

Bloggers tend to post lengthy reviews or DIY tutorials that could run into well over 100 lines. The basic rule of writing a post is to keep in mind that length or total word count, does not scare away the reader. So what can you do to overcome this problem? Simple just divide the post into number of parts!

Dividing a post has its own benefits. The first of course is that it creates an illusion that the post length is less. Second is that as the number of words on each page will be less (as compared to when the whole post is on the same page) and the loading time of your website does reduce.

So how do you do it? Well, not many people know that wordpress has a built-in feature that helps you to achieve division of posts. No plug-ins are required whatsoever.

After typing you lengthy post, switch over to the ‘HTML’ view of your post and just paste the following code at the place(s) where you want to divide the post:

<!--nextpage-->

For eg.

This is my random content. I’m writing this demo content to show the usage of nextpage tag.
<!–nextpage–>
This is the content that I want to show on the next page!

The result would appear something like this:

You can include it as much times as you need. For further customization please refer this WordPress article.

Note: If your theme does not “support” the <!–nextpage–> tag (ie. the posts aren’t getting divided or paginated), you will need to add the function
wp_link_pages()
to the single.php template file. This is generally added immediately after the function call for
the_content()
. Read more about this.

However this option is not visible straight away. You will have to tweak it a bit. Read on to know more.

Just insert the following line into your wp-config.php file:

define ('WP_ALLOW_MULTISITE', true ) ;

One of the most sought after features of combining WordPress MU and the normal edition of WordPress has been integrated into this edition. And among the other features a new default template for WordPress, Twenty Ten has been included.Although the overall feel of the previous versions have been retained, a simple and much clean white bar has replaced the older black navbar (at the top.)

Here are some screenshots:

The main syntax appeared something like: Warning: implode() [function.implode]:. Well the problem might seem heavy-duty, but the solution sure is simple, read on.

Well for the records the error appeared as follows:

Warning: implode() [function.implode]: Invalid arguments passed in /home/user/public_html/wp-includes/post.php on line 1762

This error is mainly caused by a glitch that occurs while updating the plugin – DB Cache. If you were to read the it’s description in your wordpress plugin dashboard, it clearly states – ‘Disable and enable caching after update.’ Well, that’s the solution!

To fix the above-mentioned problem, just disable and then enable the DB Cache plugin, and your error should disappear right away!

The ‘Read More’ or post summary feature has now become a standard on many blogs based on WordPress or otherwise. However one glitch with this feature, which is rather overlooked [...]

The ‘Read More’ or post summary feature has now become a standard on many blogs based on WordPress or otherwise. However one glitch with this feature, which is rather overlooked by newbie theme developers, is that , by default, when a visitor click on the Read More link, the web page loads and then automatically forwards or jumps to the spot where the tag is set in the post, skipping all the content above it.

I personally found it a little uncomfortable, considering that my blog name subscribe panel and advertisements were just skipped away.

So here’s how to remove it. There are two ways to achieve this.

Editing theme file (recommended)

This is very simple. From your wordpress theme editor (Appearence >> Editor) select the functions.php file of your active(current) theme. Now just paste the following code before the ending
?>

tag:

function remove_more_jump_link($link) {
$offset = strpos($link, '#more-');
if ($offset) {
$end = strpos($link, '"',$offset);
}
if ($end) {
$link = substr_replace($link, '', $offset, $end-$offset);
}
return $link;
}
add_filter('the_content_more_link', 'remove_more_jump_link');

Note: The only thing is that you must update your functions.php file any time you change your blogs theme.

Editing WordPress core file

This method is also pretty easy, however it includes you editing WordPress’s core file. From your FTP software or file manager just go to the wp-includes folder and look for post-template.php (in WordPress 2.1+) or template-functions-post.php and search for:

$output .= %u2018 <a href="%u2019. get_permalink() . "#more-$id\">$more_link_text</a>";

and replace the above line with:

$output .= %u2018 <a href="%u2019. get_permalink() ."\">$more_link_text</a>";

or

$output .= %u2018 <a href="%u2019. get_permalink() ."%u201D>$more_link_text</a>%u2019;

Note: Whenever you update your WordPress installation, these changes will be over-written. So you will have to make the changes every-time your WordPress is updated.

That’s it. A pretty useful change, believe me.

WordPress undoubtedly is one of the best and most widely used blogging (or CMS?) platform in the world. Be it the wide support or the great many number of plugins, to the power of customization in ones hand, its so good. But as they say, along with great power comes great responsibility. As people just went on adding plugins, themes et al, the loading times of some blogs have gone through the roof. Here are some wuick tips to speed up your blog.

Use a limited number of plugins. (recommended is not more that 20)

Reduce the number of php calls your template makes. Refer this article for some quick changes

Serve your images from a sub-domain on your server. Refer this article to achieve this step.

Use a limited number of images in your template.

Optimize images the right way. Heres a good article from techpavan.

Use a caching plugin like Hyper Cache, Super Cache or W3 total cache.

Insert javascripts (like that of statistics) from your footer.php.

Compress your style-sheet. Use this CSS compressor.

Use the Closure Compiler to compress your javascripts.

Just the other day as I was scanning through one of my blogs, I found it full of error codes. They were all over the place – on the homepage, post pages and even in the wp-admin section. The error mainly showed the following two warnings: ‘Warning: date() [function.date]:’ and ‘Warning: strtotime() [function.strtotime]:’. Ugly! Well but the solution is pretty much easy.

The whole error was something like this:

Warning: strtotime() [function.strtotime]: It is not safe to rely on the system’s timezone settings. You are *required* to use the date.timezone setting or the date_default_timezone_set() function. In case you used any of those methods and you are still getting this warning, you most likely misspelled the timezone identifier. We selected ‘Europe/Helsinki’ for ‘EEST/3.0/DST’ instead in /path/to/my/www/wp-includes/functions.php on line 35

Warning: date() [function.date]: It is not safe to rely on the system’s timezone settings. You are *required* to use the date.timezone setting or the date_default_timezone_set() function. In case you used any of those methods and you are still getting this warning, you most likely misspelled the timezone identifier. We selected ‘Europe/Helsinki’ for ‘EEST/3.0/DST’ instead in /path/to/my/www/wp-includes/functions.php on line 43

Basically the error tells you that your wordpress’s system time is not set, and it has assumed a system time which may not be accurate. And also that you need to rectify it immediately.

Solution:

There are two simple ways to solve this problem. However both requires that you edit essential system files of your blog.

Edit the wp-config.php (recommended)

Well this is the recommended as well as the easier of the two options. Just fire up your FTP software or access your web host’s file manager. Go to the directory where you have installed wordpress and search for a file called wp-config.php.

Just open it and add the following line, just below the line
define('DB_COLLATE', '');
(refer image):

date_default_timezone_set('America/Chicago');

This should be the final product:

That’s it. Now just save your the wp-config.php and your done. The error will disappear away.

Edit the php.ini

Similar to the first option use your FTP software or web host’s file manager and navigate to your php.ini file. Now edit it and insert the following code in it:

date.timezone = "America/Anchorage"

That’s it. Now save your file up and go see your blog.

Note: You can change the America/Anchorage parameter with your preferred timezone. For other parameters refer this page.

Still have problems? Comment on.

Fancy Google’s live search box (the one where results suggestions appear below the textbox)? Now you can have the very same effect on your own blog. sikbox is a new service that allows you to add a similar live search box to your blog or website and it supports blogger, wordpress, joomla, drupal and pretty much any other type of a website.

Its very easy to add this search box to your site. In fact if you don’t prefer to install it directly and want to test it, just go to their site sikbox.com and enter your blog’s address. There is a live preview search box, using which you can test the results. A live preview of makeuseof.com yielded the following results:

To add the widget to your blog just go to http://sikbox.com/ and fill in the preview form. Then just click on the ‘Get the Code’ button. Now you will be asked for your name and email. Fill it up and click on the ‘Customize and Generate Code’ button. Now you can customize the search-box (actually you customize how the results appear) and then select the code generated below and add it to your blog.

Advantages:

Free and fast

Ease of use, no complexity

Easy to install and use

No programming required

Extremely fast and lightweight

Fully customizable via skins or CSS

Image search support

Disadvantage:

The only disadvantage that I found was that for the search results to appear properly, your site must be indexed by Yahoo. This is because the widget uses Yahoo API to get the results. Otherwise its a great plugin

You can try it out by visiting sikbox.com

If you had read my article,5 Tips for Newbie Bloggers, the last tip was to submit your sitemap to major search engines like Google, Yahoo, Bing and Ask.com. But what’s the benefit? Well if your site is relatively young or new, it may take time for search engines to crawl your site and display your sites in search results. Submitting your sitemaps is one method of hurrying this process. So read on.

The process of submitting your sitemap is quite simple. If you are a blogger user (blogger.com) the link to your sitemap would be your-blog-address.blogspotcom/atom.xml. For eg http://myfreehouse.blogspot.com/atom.xml

But theres one problem here. A standard sitemap must contain all the links in your blog. However if your blog is hosted on blogger, your sitemap will contain only the 26 most recent posts. But there is a simple workaround to this.

Suppose that your blog (taking an eg. myfreehouse.blogpsot.com) contains 200 posts. So for the first 100 you can use http://myfreehouse.blogspot.com/atom.xml?redirect=false&start-index=1&max-results=100

For the next 100 you can use http://myfreehouse.blogspot.com/atom.xml?redirect=false&start-index=100&max-results=200 and son on.

If you are a wordpress user you can just install the Google Sitemap Generator Plugin for WordPress. Your sitemap will be auto-generated at your-blog-address.com/sitemap.xml. For eg. http://techwithric.com/sitemap.xml

Submitting your sitemaps:

So now to the main part Submitting your sitemaps. Just follow the following steps. Remember to replace the text in red with your sitemap’s address:

Google

You can follow this tutorial to submit your sitemap to Google.

Yahoo

http://search.yahooapis.com/SiteExplorerService/V1/updateNotification?appid=SitemapWriter&url=http://techwithric.com/sitemap.xml

http://search.yahooapis.com/SiteExplorerService/V1/ping?sitemap=http://techwithric.com/sitemap.xml

Bing

http://www.bing.com/webmaster/ping.aspx?siteMap=http://techwithric.com/sitemap.xml

http://webmaster.live.com/ping.aspx?siteMap=http://techwithric.com/sitemap.xml

Ask

http://submissions.ask.com/ping?sitemap=http://techwithric.com/sitemap.xml

If submit your sitempas to the major search engines, it is more likely that they will crawl your website more quickly. So do it! Hope you liked this tutorial. More to follow!
