High speed internet is practically a birthright these days. The question is, is your internet as fast as it could be? We all know the problems that country dwellers have when trying to get the broadband speeds advertised on their packages – so we’ll ignore that for now and concentrate instead on the proliferation of package choices.

The easiest way to do that is by comparing some of the package types offered by major internet providers. AT&T, Comcast, Verizon and Charter all offer a range of agile download speeds for home internet use – they come in all sorts of speed brackets, with all kinds of price tags attached.

Time Warner, for example, offers download speeds (average speeds of course, be aware with any provider that the big figure you see on the adverts is an optimum scenario you are never likely to reach) ranging from 10 MBps to 50 MBps – while the FiOS system run by Verizon can deliver up to 150 MBps of download speeds. The bigger the package, the more add-ons you tend to get, too – like the top range Time Warner internet packages, which allow you to connect up to five wireless devices without an extra fee.

The issue of multiple connectivity – which is one of the reasons why we want high-speed internet in the first place – is something of a bugbear. Internet providers have yet to supply signals that allow limitless numbers of mobile devices to connect – which is ludicrous, when you think about it. You’re paying for the signal, after all, and the equipment used to distribute that signal. So putting a cap on the number of devices you can use in your own home to consume it smacks of nothing other than greed.

Still, there you go – and from internet providers to internet providers you’ll never find one that doesn’t take the opportunity to levy an extra charge where it thinks it can get away with it. So you might as well just be grateful that you can (if you live in a decent signal area, anyway) get a signal that provides a genuinely fast connection.

So – what’s the point of all this speed? Take a look at the descriptions next to the fastest packages on the internet providers’ websites and you’ll work it out easily enough. Huge speeds (above 20 MBps, say) are useful for running maximum numbers of multiple devices, and for downloading movies and music while continuing to use your connection for other things. If all you ever do is surf and send email, then even 2 MBps will be more than enough.

The real point of the insanely fast speeds now possible on home internet connections is this: you can start living online. You can shop, work and play there – often at the same time from all over your house – without experiencing lags, delays or worrying breaches in your security. In other words: the internet has finally come of age. The speed you need to unlock its real potential has just landed, in the form of hundreds of battling packages from the top internet providers in the country. Take your pick – wisely – and start enjoying the net as it was meant to be enjoyed.

Just a few days ago I had lodged a complain in the customer care division of my telephone service provider for deducting money from my account for no clear reasons and later I felt good, really good when a real person called me up and solved the issue. This is what has changed my perception of social media marketing campaign. We, social media marketers are running too much after brand presence and forgetting the basic that the purpose of social media is to getting connected to people and not just staying aloof and trying to make people aware of the goodness of your companies in every possible way. Here I am going to shatter some common misconception that are acting as deterrent into building a ‘real’ relationship with real people.

Get Closer, Get personal:

Just take a sneak-peek around some popular twitter or Facebook profiles of some leading corporate organizations and you will be surprised to see that all of them are filled with boring information bragging about the success in an overtly way. No effort to build up relationship with real people, no attempt to start a conversion with followers. It is just draining of resources.

Just posting blah, blah, blah about your company in Facebook fan page or twitter is not going to help you build up your brand. You need to come down to earth and act like a normal human being not behaving like a leading corporate agency suffering from a terrible bout of superiority complex. Do not split out things like, we have launched this or that in social media website. Add some humane elements in them unless you are launching a rocket for moon.

Have a Purpose:

You need to have a strong reason to have your presence in social media website. Just because your competitors are going great gun at Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare etc, it does not indicate that it is your moral and religious duty to join them and start promoting your service like anything else or that you should treat your Facebook or Twitter profile like a free-to-ad platform and dump it with all the services, links and promotional activities. People are least interest to see them. Try to get connected to your targeted audience. Launch a campaign and offer some cool freebies and you will see people will be promoting your services automatically and voluntarily.

For the people, by the people, of the People:

Zappos.com has a wonderful human touch to their commenting system

Social media is a democratic platform and therefore, you should make it a point that you are abiding by the rules and the regulations. It is not good idea to have a faceless organization. Rather than creating and promoting the official page of your organization, you should encourage some of your faithful employees to be active on their social presence. It will be a nice experience for general users when they will be talking to real people of an organization. People often forget that brand image of a company is made off its employees. So, you can easily give your organization a human face by letting your employees answering the queries of customers. People will find it comfortable to speak with company representatives rather than talking with a non entity.

So, the secret of success in social media marketing campaign is to be human!

Keyboard shortcuts are like the secret handshake of computer cult knowledge. Knowing shortcuts will grant you access to time-saving and people-impressing secrets, and will immediately make you more attractive to members of the opposite sex. Ok, so maybe knowing keyboard shortcuts won’t improve your popularity with members of the opposite sex, but it will save you time and probably will improve your self-esteem as well, as you’ll know how to do stuff most people don’t.

There are hundreds of keyboard commands to learn, most of them being Windows commands that allow you to navigate and control your computer and certain programs. Google, however, also has its own list of keyboard commands that allow you to browse through your Gmail without ever taking your fingers away from the keys.

I started using Gmail’s keyboard shortcuts when they were first released from the Google labs, and now I hardly ever use my mouse. What follows is a brief guide to turning on keyboard shortcuts in Gmail, and how to use them once you’ve turned them on.

First, you have to enable the keyboard shortcuts feature in Gmail. To do that:

Click the icon in the top right corner of the screen in Gmail (it looks like a gear), and click “Mail Settings”

In the “General” settings tab, look for “keyboard shortcuts” and then click the bubble that says “enable”

Start browsing your Gmail with shortcuts! It’s really that easy!!!

At this point, you’re probably wondering, though: Great, I have the shortcuts enabled; but how do I use them?

That’s a great question, and one that I can only partially answer. Google provides a complete list of all keyboard shortcuts, which I will reproduce in an abbreviated list here, but just knowing the shortcuts is only the start. It will be slow going at first, primarily because most people aren’t used to shortcut browsing, least of all in their e-mail clients. Here are the basic commands you’ll probably want to start with, just to familiarize yourself with the concept. Again, it won’t come overnight, but if you take a few shortcuts at a time and commit them to memory (also making sure to use them occasionally) you’ll have it down in no time.

These are the basic key commands in Gmail (compliments of the Gmail team). There are many others, which you can research at the above link. Again, don’t be disheartened because you don’t know them all or because it isn’t second nature to you. It will take time to learn these keyboard shortcuts, but once you do, you’ll be a member of that special club, and will be able to amaze all your friends with your secret handshake.

I’m a Google fanboy and have no qualms whatever to admit it. And like any other fan, I have an android (obviously!) And like all good things have a down-side, [...]

I’m a Google fanboy and have no qualms whatever to admit it. And like any other fan, I have an android (obviously!) And like all good things have a down-side, Android does tend to slow down a little over a period of time. So here’s a series of articles for speeding up your android.

Note: Please do note that these tutorials are aimed at advanced users, so please be careful. I’m not gonna be responsible if you brick your phone.

As always, to realize the true potential of an Android you need to root it. This does cause your warranty to go void, so its your call: performance or warranty. To root your phone, follow the tutorial over here.

So in the first tutorial, we are gonna add the hacks right into the build.prop file. This file basically controls major properties of your android.

Follow these steps:

I can already tell this decade will be the decade of information security, or “cyber wars” as the media sensationalizes it. With hackers in China hacking Google and many more hacking everywhere else, everyone – from private citizens to huge corporations and government agencies – is getting more concerned about their private information and how it is being protected.

Well, as it turns out, one of the best practices of securing your personal information is to create and manage multiple passwords for each account. Of course this doesn’t really protect you if, say, the entire network of the site you trust your information to gets hacked, but it’s great for protecting your accounts, if someone manages to hack only one. And believe it or not, the process of managing multiple passwords does not have to be as much of a headache as it would seem. All it takes is a smart yet subtle system.

Essential Security
If there is only one thing you must take away from this post here it is: Don’t share passwords between your email (or your bank) and last.fm. And by this I mean establish unique, higher-profile passwords for sites with your most important information. If you have a bunch of accounts that don’t contain very serious information, like your last.fm, accounts to forums, or anywhere else that likely wouldn’t have your credit card information, it’s excusable – though still not advisable – to share passwords between these.

Otherwise, if some noob hacks one of these accounts, they could then trace your email from that account, and the first thing they will do is see if the same password for the account they hacked works on your email. There is a surprising amount of people who share their email password with other more unimportant accounts; I used to be included in this group of people. It is about one of the dumbest things you can do with your information online.

The Smart System
While it is extremely important to keep in mind my advice in the point above about having separate passwords for high security information, I will now tell you of a great way to arrange one password into multiple passwords that can be used on different sites.

Start With a Keyword
This will be the main “emphasis” of your password, meaning this will essentially be how you will remember your password. Try to use a keyword that isn’t an actual word in your native language, or perhaps give it a unique spelling. Names can also be a good idea as well, but don’t be obvious as someone with your personal information could easily crack it. Remember that you can also use two keywords, particularly if they are both small in character length. For the purposes of this post, let’s say I come up with the keyword: buzzrd.

Modify the Keyword Head and Tail
Here’s the nifty part. Use elements of the account you are passwording to come up with these head and tail modifications. For example, in my last.fm account, I might make it: labuzzrdfm. However, for Meebo, I might make it mebuzzrdbo. What I did here, was take the first two characters and last two characters of the site I’m logging into, and made them the head and tail of my password.

Of course, I do not suggest using such a simple method of creating a head and tail to your password; I did that only to create a simple and clear example. A better idea would be taking the second and fourth characters of the website, or perhaps the second- and third-to-last characters of the username you are logging into. Essentially, you want to use arbitrary elements of the site and username to make each password you have unique and that much harder to crack.

I also think it’s a good idea to add numbers somewhere in your password, perhaps breaking up your keyword or maybe in between your keyword and the head and tail. I wouldn’t worry as much about using different numbers for each password as that will become exponentially harder to remember.

The imminent closing down of Google Pages might not be news, but the efforts that Google are taking in order that users get a smooth transition, once Google Pages closes down, is great! Firs there was the ‘download all your content‘ campaign, and now it is offering blogger (blogspot) users a chance to backup all their scripts (or for that fact any references to googlepages) on to a new server @ bloggerhosting.appspot.com
If your template makes any reference to google pages (like scripts or css), you would notice the message immediately once you log in to your blogger dashboard:

The message reads as follows:

Update your templates

Your templates include links to files hosted on Google Page Creator, a service that is soon migrating to Google Sites. Do you want Blogger to update those links now? Learn more

There is a ‘Update and review‘ link at the bottom of the message. Once you click it the new domain,’bloggerhosting.appspot.com’ would ask you to allow permissions to access your account. Just approve it.

Once done, you will be redirected to a page that will show all your blogs and check which one’s have references to googlepages (in their template.)

If any of your blog has a reference to googlepages in it, just click on the ‘Update References >>‘ link. It will now ask you to download (and backup) your template.

After clicking on ‘Next‘, all your references (like the scripts or css files or images) will be automatically uploaded to bloggerhosting.appspot.com. For eg. my script, that was previously hosted on http://myfreehouse2.googlepages.com/lightbox.js would now be moved to http://bloggerhosting.appspot.com/serve/myfreehouse2.googlepages.com/lightbox.js

Now all you need to do is click the ‘Update‘ button at the bottom, and your template will be modified with all the new links. Pretty neat!

So don’t wait much, as it seems the Google will now hurry up the closing of GP, and you wouldn’t want to lose any of your data, eh?

WordPress undoubtedly is one of the best and most widely used blogging (or CMS?) platform in the world. Be it the wide support or the great many number of plugins, to the power of customization in ones hand, its so good. But as they say, along with great power comes great responsibility. As people just went on adding plugins, themes et al, the loading times of some blogs have gone through the roof. Here are some wuick tips to speed up your blog.

Use a limited number of plugins. (recommended is not more that 20)

Reduce the number of php calls your template makes. Refer this article for some quick changes

Serve your images from a sub-domain on your server. Refer this article to achieve this step.

Use a limited number of images in your template.

Optimize images the right way. Heres a good article from techpavan.

Use a caching plugin like Hyper Cache, Super Cache or W3 total cache.

Insert javascripts (like that of statistics) from your footer.php.

Compress your style-sheet. Use this CSS compressor.

Use the Closure Compiler to compress your javascripts.

Enable caching and GZipping from your .htacess. Refer to this article for other .htacess hacks along with the above mentioned ones.

Hmm. Definitely a checklist to be followed. Leaving the 5th point the rest are only one-time hacks. Just do it once and enjoy its benefits forever! Got some more tips? Share them.

OK. So your also on the blogging bandwagon. You’ve just set-up your blog, wrote about 5-6 articles and just basking in its glory. You’ve made your parents, siblings and your friends visit it, and they rave about hove great it is and they ask questions like ‘How did you do it?’ and ‘Did you program this page?’ If your state is somewhat like this, then this article is for you.

When I started out blogging a couple of years back, I used to just rant about stuff that didn’t matter at all. (I still do that though, keeps my mind fresh!) Back then there were few quality articles that would state what needs to be done to keep up a good blog. So here are the tips that I have compiled through my experience.

Don’t get disheartened

Its pretty easy for a first-timer to give-up quite fast. Even I did. But give it a little time. My first blog didn’t even have 20 regular visitors for the first 6 months!

Even if people don’t come to your blog initially, they will do so later. Just blog dude, no worries.

Post regularly

One mistake that most bloggers tend to do is to post about 10-20 posts within the first month, and then only update it like once in 2-3 weeks. Fresh content is what search engines look for. The more fresh your content is, the more will be the people to come to your blog.

Find your niche

What’s a niche first of all? Well basically its a category (of a particular product or service) that you would want to focus your attention on. For eg. TWR is focused on the tech niche.

This is a pretty tricky step in any bloggers life. Its okay if you start out with a broad niche like tech, but as you go further along you need to figure out what your good at, and focus your attention towards that. The more you focus on a single niche, the more great content you can generate.

Build a community

Never ever leave your visitors high and dry! Your blog readers are everything to you. Reply to their comments, provide email or RSS-based subscription available for your visitors to follow your blog are among certain things you can do.

If you can, then building a forum and providing support to them is also a good idea.

Submit your site map to Google, Yahoo, Bing

Well it all comes down to one thing, Blog Marketing. If you don’t market it well, you don’t get anything good in return. If you follow the above steps religiously the majority part of your marketing process is covered.

Submitting site maps is also one great method to increase your organic search ratings. You can read this tutorial on how to submit your site map to the main search providers.

Well hope you liked these tips. I’ve followed them, and tasted success for sure. How about you?

Well just the other day I was back to my usual business of downloading (won’t say what ) and I encountered a file with a .mdf extension. Hmm, that’s when I remembered that I had made a video about how to use these types of files and what to do with it. Well basically the .mds file is a sort of address-holder for the mdf file. The main data is stored into the mdf file, and the mds file contains data about it. (You could somewhat compare it to a pointer in C/C++)

The loading instruction for iso is the same, only that you won’t have a mds file for it. You just directly load the iso file.

Just view the video below:

If your looking for a free software in place of Alcohol 120%, you could use some like ISO Recorder (recommended) to burn iso or InfraRecorder to burn a mdf file.

If you have any doubt, don’t hesitate to comment!

Well I used Windows XP earlier and then directly skipped to Windows 7. And one of the best features, that I simply loved in Windows 7 was the Movie Maker. Although not a great video editor, it still allowed bare-bones editing, which was enough for me. But voila! No Movie Maker in Win7 by default! Lets see how we can get it.

Actually the process is quite simple. First of all go to download.live.com, and download the software (you can download it in your language as well, by clicking on the Download button to the right.

After you have downloaded the software, open it. There will be a loading window at first. Wait a little, this may take some time especially on slow computers.

Now a new window must have opened with a list of softwares that you can install. Check the software that you want to install, in our case Movie Maker, and then just press the Install button.

Well now all you got to do is wait. Go grab a cup of coffee while the softwares are downloaded.

After the download is complete, you may be asked to reboot. Do so, and there you are, you’ve got Windows Movie Maker installed in Windows 7!

Tip: If you want to install any other application (for eg. Live Writer) just open the software that you downloaded at the first step, and check the software that you want. Just follow the above steps.

If you want to uninstall it, you can do so by going to Control Panel -> Programs -> Uninstall a Program, and in the new window that opens, scroll down to Windows Live Essentials. Double Click on it and click Continue.
