Well I had earlier posted about 8 ways to install related posts in blogger. Nothing wrong in those methods and nothing much great in this one. The only difference is that I’ll post a step by step solution along with a video tutorial. Hope you enjoy it.

You can view the video tutorial here. For an image only tutorial follow on below. You can get the code’s shown in the video from below:

AC_FL_RunContent('codebase', 'http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=9,0,0,0', 'width', '560', 'height', '340', 'src', 'http://techwithric.com/wp-content/plugins/hana-flv-player/osflv/' + ((!DetectFlashVer(9, 0, 0) && DetectFlashVer(8, 0, 0)) ? 'player8' : 'player'), 'pluginspage', 'http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer', 'id', 'flvPlayer', 'allowFullScreen', 'true', 'movie', 'http://techwithric.com/wp-content/plugins/hana-flv-player/osflv/' + ((!DetectFlashVer(9, 0, 0) && DetectFlashVer(8, 0, 0)) ?
OK. So the installation goes as this:

First login to your blogger account and under the blog in which you want to implement the related posts, click onLayout. Next click on Edit HTML.

Now check the Expand Widget Templates check-box (as shown below). This check-box is found on the top-right of the box containing your template’s code.

Now press Ctrl+F to bring about your ‘Find Box’ in your browser, and search for the following code.

</div>

<!--Remove--></b:if>
<!-- Related Posts Code End-->

You can change the number of related posts to be displayed by editing the number in pink.

To show related posts on all pages, just delete the text in red from both of the code listings.

The other addition is that there is also an option to add images from your Picasa Album’s directly from the image uploader.

Although such image uploading capability was available much earlier in Blogger’s main competitor, WordPress, the recent upgrade in WordPress that gave users to crop scale and edit their image online must have forced blogger to rethink some ideas.

Although this tool has been released into blogger, users can only access this by going to draft.blogger.com. BTW the web-world was all about comments of blogger ‘catching-up to wordpress.’

The imminent closing down of Google Pages might not be news, but the efforts that Google are taking in order that users get a smooth transition, once Google Pages closes down, is great! Firs there was the ‘download all your content‘ campaign, and now it is offering blogger (blogspot) users a chance to backup all their scripts (or for that fact any references to googlepages) on to a new server @ bloggerhosting.appspot.com
If your template makes any reference to google pages (like scripts or css), you would notice the message immediately once you log in to your blogger dashboard:

The message reads as follows:

Update your templates

Your templates include links to files hosted on Google Page Creator, a service that is soon migrating to Google Sites. Do you want Blogger to update those links now? Learn more

There is a ‘Update and review‘ link at the bottom of the message. Once you click it the new domain,’bloggerhosting.appspot.com’ would ask you to allow permissions to access your account. Just approve it.

Once done, you will be redirected to a page that will show all your blogs and check which one’s have references to googlepages (in their template.)

If any of your blog has a reference to googlepages in it, just click on the ‘Update References >>‘ link. It will now ask you to download (and backup) your template.

After clicking on ‘Next‘, all your references (like the scripts or css files or images) will be automatically uploaded to bloggerhosting.appspot.com. For eg. my script, that was previously hosted on http://myfreehouse2.googlepages.com/lightbox.js would now be moved to http://bloggerhosting.appspot.com/serve/myfreehouse2.googlepages.com/lightbox.js

Now all you need to do is click the ‘Update‘ button at the bottom, and your template will be modified with all the new links. Pretty neat!

So don’t wait much, as it seems the Google will now hurry up the closing of GP, and you wouldn’t want to lose any of your data, eh?

Many people wonder about how to convert their blogger (or blogspot) blog into a book. Of course some alternatives like using the ‘Save as PDF’ button or PDFmyURL exists, they have their limitations. They are great tools, but they offer conversion of only a single blog page. That would mean a lot of work for a book! That’s why I’m going to share this site called sharedbook, in this post.

To convert your blogspot blog into a book, first go to blogspot.sharedbook.com. Then just enter your blog address and your on you way!

You can select from a variety of options from the next page, like if you want to include all posts or just posts from a specific time-range as well as comments of that post, customize front and back cover, title and design. Another cool feature is the customized ‘From the Author’ page, where you can enter a 350-character introductory para.

Once your done with that, just click on the ‘Create Book‘ button, to generate your book. You can preview your book now, in a flash interface, and make any changes that you might want to make.

Pluses:

Very easy

Lots of customization

Feature to save your project, and complete it another time

Minuses:

There is a 1000 image limit for 1 book

Not able to select specific posts for printing

Currently a Soft Cover copy for my blog (which includes some 50 posts) costs $14.95 and a Hard Cover one costs $24.95. It’s also available for download in digital file format for $7.95. The rates will differ according to your content.

Currently the tool supports only Blogger. Although not similar, (self-hosted) wordpress users could try out WPTEX. So what say, are you gonna make your blog’s book?

Fancy Google’s live search box (the one where results suggestions appear below the textbox)? Now you can have the very same effect on your own blog. sikbox is a new service that allows you to add a similar live search box to your blog or website and it supports blogger, wordpress, joomla, drupal and pretty much any other type of a website.

Its very easy to add this search box to your site. In fact if you don’t prefer to install it directly and want to test it, just go to their site sikbox.com and enter your blog’s address. There is a live preview search box, using which you can test the results. A live preview of makeuseof.com yielded the following results:

To add the widget to your blog just go to http://sikbox.com/ and fill in the preview form. Then just click on the ‘Get the Code’ button. Now you will be asked for your name and email. Fill it up and click on the ‘Customize and Generate Code’ button. Now you can customize the search-box (actually you customize how the results appear) and then select the code generated below and add it to your blog.

Advantages:

Free and fast

Ease of use, no complexity

Easy to install and use

No programming required

Extremely fast and lightweight

Fully customizable via skins or CSS

Image search support

Disadvantage:

The only disadvantage that I found was that for the search results to appear properly, your site must be indexed by Yahoo. This is because the widget uses Yahoo API to get the results. Otherwise its a great plugin

You can try it out by visiting sikbox.com

Swashata, from intechgrity.com, has posted a well-written and detailed tutorial of implementing the related posts system in a blogspot blog using jQuery.

You can read and refer to the tutorial at devilsworkshop, from here.

3 Ways to implement related Posts from Mohamed Rias

Okay, I’m cheating over here. Althought the post screams ’8 Ways to implement…’, I’ve combined three methods into a single point. That’s because the original article is also a single post.

Mohamed Rias, in his blog techieblogger, has shown three methods to implement his version of the related posts. Although the framework and logic behind the related posts of this type is the same, the ways of implementation differ. It has been separated by being specified by method one, two and three.

Personally speaking, this was one of the best related posts solution that was available out there for quite some time. I myself used the third method for more than one year. You can refer to the guide from here.

Google Related Links

This is a relatively new entrant into the field of related posts for blogger. Many even don’t know of its existence, mostly because it is only invite-based for the moment.

As stated earlier, currently, only invited users can use Related Links. To apply for an invitation, please send an email to relatedlinks@google.com stating your Gmail address, website domains and approximate pageviews per day.

In the mean time you could try it out by filling out this form

Blogger Related Posts Service

This is what I’m talking about. The easiest and most convenient method of implementing related posts in blogger. Its so simple, just follow the steps below:

Step 1: Go to Layout => Edit HTML => Edit Template
Step 2: BACKUP your template! Do not skip this!
Step 3: Check Expand Widget Templates, then find for a block like:

<div class="post-footer-line post-footer-line-3">...</div>

At the end of the </div>, add the following line:

<div id="related_posts">

so that the final product will look something like this:

<div class="post-footer-line post-footer-line-3">
/*some code*/
</div>
<div id="related_posts">

Step 5: Go to the end and search for </body> and replace it with the following code:

<script src='http://www.google.com/jsapi'/><script src='http://brps.appspot.com/brps.js' type='text/javascript'/></body>

Alternatively you can just click on the button below:

 <script src=”http://www.google.com/jsapi”></script> <script src=”http://brps.appspot.com/brps.js” type=”text/javascript”></script> <div id=”related_posts”></div>

You can read more about it from here.

Related posts using jQuery + GData API

Another great method that i found out was the one posted at moretechtips.net . It’s simply a super and easy method to implement this widget. Just refer to this tutorial.

Related Posts using LinkWithin

This one is slightly different from the one’s posted above. All the above related posts show text links as related posts. However the LinkWithin widget shows an image from the related post as the link, as shown in the picture below (click on the image to view a larger version):

You can register at their site, and get the appropriate installation method. Go to LinkWithin.

Hope you liked the post. If you’ve got any doubts, don’t hesitate to comment.

If you had read my article,5 Tips for Newbie Bloggers, the last tip was to submit your sitemap to major search engines like Google, Yahoo, Bing and Ask.com. But what’s the benefit? Well if your site is relatively young or new, it may take time for search engines to crawl your site and display your sites in search results. Submitting your sitemaps is one method of hurrying this process. So read on.

The process of submitting your sitemap is quite simple. If you are a blogger user (blogger.com) the link to your sitemap would be your-blog-address.blogspotcom/atom.xml. For eg http://myfreehouse.blogspot.com/atom.xml

But theres one problem here. A standard sitemap must contain all the links in your blog. However if your blog is hosted on blogger, your sitemap will contain only the 26 most recent posts. But there is a simple workaround to this.

Suppose that your blog (taking an eg. myfreehouse.blogpsot.com) contains 200 posts. So for the first 100 you can use http://myfreehouse.blogspot.com/atom.xml?redirect=false&start-index=1&max-results=100

For the next 100 you can use http://myfreehouse.blogspot.com/atom.xml?redirect=false&start-index=100&max-results=200 and son on.

If you are a wordpress user you can just install the Google Sitemap Generator Plugin for WordPress. Your sitemap will be auto-generated at your-blog-address.com/sitemap.xml. For eg. http://techwithric.com/sitemap.xml

Submitting your sitemaps:

So now to the main part Submitting your sitemaps. Just follow the following steps. Remember to replace the text in red with your sitemap’s address:

Google

You can follow this tutorial to submit your sitemap to Google.

Yahoo

http://search.yahooapis.com/SiteExplorerService/V1/updateNotification?appid=SitemapWriter&url=http://techwithric.com/sitemap.xml

http://search.yahooapis.com/SiteExplorerService/V1/ping?sitemap=http://techwithric.com/sitemap.xml

Bing

http://www.bing.com/webmaster/ping.aspx?siteMap=http://techwithric.com/sitemap.xml

http://webmaster.live.com/ping.aspx?siteMap=http://techwithric.com/sitemap.xml

Ask

http://submissions.ask.com/ping?sitemap=http://techwithric.com/sitemap.xml

If submit your sitempas to the major search engines, it is more likely that they will crawl your website more quickly. So do it! Hope you liked this tutorial. More to follow!

OK. So your also on the blogging bandwagon. You've just set-up your blog, wrote about 5-6 articles and just basking in its glory. You've made your parents, siblings and your friends visit it, and they rave about hove great it is and they ask questions like 'How did you do it?' and 'Did you program this page?' If your state is somewhat like this, then this article is for you.

OK. So your also on the blogging bandwagon. You’ve just set-up your blog, wrote about 5-6 articles and just basking in its glory. You’ve made your parents, siblings and your friends visit it, and they rave about hove great it is and they ask questions like ‘How did you do it?’ and ‘Did you program this page?’ If your state is somewhat like this, then this article is for you.

When I started out blogging a couple of years back, I used to just rant about stuff that didn’t matter at all. (I still do that though, keeps my mind fresh!) Back then there were few quality articles that would state what needs to be done to keep up a good blog. So here are the tips that I have compiled through my experience.

Don’t get disheartened

Its pretty easy for a first-timer to give-up quite fast. Even I did. But give it a little time. My first blog didn’t even have 20 regular visitors for the first 6 months!

Even if people don’t come to your blog initially, they will do so later. Just blog dude, no worries.

Post regularly

One mistake that most bloggers tend to do is to post about 10-20 posts within the first month, and then only update it like once in 2-3 weeks. Fresh content is what search engines look for. The more fresh your content is, the more will be the people to come to your blog.

Find your niche

What’s a niche first of all? Well basically its a category (of a particular product or service) that you would want to focus your attention on. For eg. TWR is focused on the tech niche.

This is a pretty tricky step in any bloggers life. Its okay if you start out with a broad niche like tech, but as you go further along you need to figure out what your good at, and focus your attention towards that. The more you focus on a single niche, the more great content you can generate.

Build a community

Never ever leave your visitors high and dry! Your blog readers are everything to you. Reply to their comments, provide email or RSS-based subscription available for your visitors to follow your blog are among certain things you can do.

If you can, then building a forum and providing support to them is also a good idea.

Submit your site map to Google, Yahoo, Bing

Well it all comes down to one thing, Blog Marketing. If you don’t market it well, you don’t get anything good in return. If you follow the above steps religiously the majority part of your marketing process is covered.

Submitting site maps is also one great method to increase your organic search ratings. You can read this tutorial on how to submit your site map to the main search providers.

Well hope you liked these tips. I’ve followed them, and tasted success for sure. How about you?
